The school district was ultimately given more time to update their plan, and this process will now likely last through October. Here's my summary of what's new in the debate over Rose Tree Media School District's proposed K-1 Center. If you want a fuller picture, [take a look at](https://www.middletownobserver.com/whats-new-in-the-k1-center-debate/) [my previous coverage](https://www.middletownobserver.com/rose-tree-media-k1-center-explained/). ### New from the district Dr. Meloche announced a district-hosted "community meeting and discussion about traffic and about bringing together all the passionate members of our community, our elected officials, members of the planning commission if they want to be there, residents, anyone with a vested interest in the traffic problem that we all face on a daily basis." He said this will take place on Monday, September 14th, at 6:30pm at Springton Lake Media Center. The district said it's now adding physical traffic controls between the K-1 Center and Penncrest parking lots. This would stop high school students from driving through the K-1 Center's grounds. I had [previously covered this as a concern](https://www.middletownobserver.com/whats-new-in-the-k1-center-debate/) in the July meeting. The district also confirmed a Traffic Impact Study is coming in "roughly a few weeks". Additionally, the district added a crosswalk to the overall plan, connecting the K-1 Center to Longview Park across Rose Tree Road. A representative for the district said "this pedestrian crossing in this area...crosses and gets you to the park. And then from there, there is the trail system that essentially serves as a sidewalk. This could provide the connectivity to and from the \[new\] traffic signal and ultimately to cross 352\. That would be in lieu of providing additional sidewalk." ****Correction (Aug 20)**: Middletown Township asked to have the crosswalk included into the plan in their feedback. Previous versions of this article said the school district proposed it. ### New from the opposition Overall, those opposed to the K-1 Center focused on traffic. They asked for more clarity outside of the district's plan to watch and adjust after building. One resident criticized it as "one big experiment". Another resident asked why the study omitted Route 452 and Route 1 entirely in its analysis. Residents said the traffic study didn't account for after school activity traffic. [Familiar objections about site location](https://www.middletownobserver.com/whats-new-in-the-k1-center-debate/) persisted. One resident, citing his own figures, said the proposed K-1 Center building would be bigger than the 80,000-square-foot Rocky Run YMCA and the 60,000-square-foot Hilton Garden Inn, calling it 'an oversized industrial project.' ### New from supporters Supporting speakers pushed back on the idea that the opposition represented the whole community. One speaker said "If you look around this room tonight, you're going to hear a lot of vocal opposition from a minority that does not represent the community at large...These concerns are real and valid, but these are engineering challenges to be actively managed. They are not reasons to walk away from our children's future." ### Zooming out and what's next The biggest change was the makeup of public commenters. During the July meeting, I counted 36% in favor, and that ratio [dropped to 13% in favor in this meeting](https://www.middletownobserver.com/no-vote-on-k1-center-again/). That shift comes only months after voters rejected a [Republican slate that had campaigned explicitly against the K-1 Center](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1418546011549163/posts/32079987201644975/), by a 60% to 40% margin, [this past November](https://results.enr.clarityelections.com/PA/Delaware/125145/web.345435/?ref=middletownobserver.com#/summary?voteType=ALL&precinct=ALL&party=ALL&district=Middletown%20Twp). The next Planning Commission meeting is Tuesday, September 8 at 6:30pm. The district may need more time to revise their plans, potentially pushing discussion of this proposal to Tuesday, October 13th. As always, Middletown Observer will be following along.
